Scientists at the Duke-NUS Medical School have discovered a way to restore impaired kidney function through regenerative therapy.
In a preclinical study, the team found that blocking the damaging and scar-regulating protein interleukin-11 (IL-11), can allow damaged kidney cells to regenerate and restore kidney function in response to disease or injury.
By inhibiting IL-11 with a neutralizing antibody, the researchers showed that they can prevent and even reverse kidney damage, leading to a potential new target in the treatment of chronic kidney disease.
