Scaffold that regenerates bone could replace metallic implants

The use of metallic implants can be traced all the way back to the 16th century.

Surgeons use them to fix broken bones, replace worn-out joints and correct other skeletal deformities.

But we might soon move away from metal. Researchers have developed a scaffold that can regenerate bone, before dissolving.

Titanium is not intended for bodily implantation. To make the surface of titanium acceptable for use within the body, scientists must change it. The mechanical strength of titanium is taken into consideration. Dr. Hala Zreiqat  is researching a material that may both promote bone growth and tolerate loads that are applied to the body.
