The cells were grown over a two-week period during which they enjoyed a daily workout routine in a bioreactor that waggled about inside the robot. In the paper, the researchers wanted some optimistic speculation about the potential of this line of work. As described in an article published in Communications Engineering, they adapted an open-source robot skeleton designed by the engineers at Devanthro. They created a custom growing environment for the cells that can be fitted into the frame to bend and flex as required.
