First International Congress of Personalized Medicine Was Held in Imam Khomeini Hospital Conference Center
According to the public relations and international affairs of the council for development of stem cell sciences and technologies, the panel of “Cell Therapy in Personalized Medicine” Headed by Dr. Hamidieh was held on Feb. 27th in Tehran Imam Khomeini Hospital Conference Center at the first international congress of personalized medicine in Iran. The first speaker of this section, Alireza Shoa-Hasani, talks about the use of personalized medicine in Pediatrics. Incurable diseases such as cancer in children by utilizing specific genetic tests may have better therapeutic results Compared with medication regardless of individual genetic markers, he said. The sequence of the genome of a patient can determine the type of service is appropriate for him. He gave statistics of the application of this technology and mentioned that; 900 molecular targeted cancer treatments have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and 270 clinical trials have been studied in various diseases in children.
The second speaker was Philippos C. Patsalis from Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics that spoke about the new generation of non-invasive prenatal genetic diagnosis.
Dr. Mohammad Nejad from Tehran University of Medical Science said; Cancer is one of the biggest challenges is the health system in the world. Chemotherapy as one of the main tools for the treatment of cancer only in 25% of patients will lead to a full recovery. This is partly rooted in cancer treatment strategy based on the "one medicine for all". Hence we need to change the traditional treatment to personalized medicine. The aim of personalized medicine is to increase the amount of treatable diseases through optimal therapeutic regimens based on genotypic, phenotypic and environmental characteristics of patient. Using cells to predict the response to treatment as one of the main tools of personalized medicine in cancer are considered, he mentioned.
Next speaker of this panel was Dr. Mohammad Reza Rashidi, deputy of research at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, that discussed about individual biosensors in personalized medicine. He talks about the use of biosensors in Pharmacogenetics, Pharmacokinetics and use of various types of micro-RNA in detection kits. Dr. Fakhr Taha from the National Institute for Genetic Engineering also talks about using stem cells in personalized medicine. He describes the types of stem cells, stem cell history and some clinical trials using variety of stem cells. He also introduced suitable diseases for treatment by using stem cells in personalized medicine.
At the end, Dr. Hamidieh, secretary of council, concluded the panel discussion and emphasized the need for maximum use of all researchers across the country.
