According to the secretary general of the national council for the development and monitoring of HLA registries and cord blood banks, Iranian National Stem Cell Donor Network (INSCDN) has joined the Bone Marrow Donor Worldwide (BMDW), and therefore, search among the volunteer hematopoietic cell donors of other countries for patients with cancer and other refractory diseases has become available for all transplant centers and HLA registries across the country.
The first Iranian donor center (HLA registry) was founded about 7 years ago. Now with the support of Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the number of these centers has increased to 9 located in various parts of Iran and there are centers that are going to be established and equipped in the near future, as well. After institution of these centers, it was necessary to coordinate and connect the centers via a national network, which facilitates a prompt online search. This was achieved at the beginning of 2016, with the support of Minister of Health and Medical Education, Dr. Hassan Hashemi, by setting up INSCDN.
The next step for the INSCDN was to make search among worldwide donors feasible, and this occurred on September 2nd 2016 by connecting to the global network of donors (BMDW). BMDW is an international organization that coordinates the collection of the HLA phenotypes and other relevant data of worldwide volunteer hematopoietic cell donors and cord blood units, and provides the opportunity for on-line search in these data for the Member States.
