Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells Technologies

According to the public relations and international affairs of the council for development of stem cell sciences and technologies, Dr. Hamidieh, secretary of the council in the 7^th Yazd international congress in reproductive medicine said: Academic standing of Iran in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine has a significant growth in recent years and publication of scientific articles in prestigious international journals has a favorable increase. In 2016, Iran predicted to be on the 20^th position of world ranking in the field of stem cell and regenerative medicine while by the end of 2016 Iran reached to 15^th position in the world and first in the Middle East. The statistics also indicate that 22 percent of paper’s publication in the field of stem cell and regenerative medicine in the greater Middle East has done by our scientist in Iran.

Currently 44 universities, research centers and institutes are active in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine. This led in 2016 only about 120 research projects with the support of the council for development of stem cell sciences and technologies is conducted, he added.

He mentioned that by using of stem cell technology, significant progress has been made in the field of reproductive biology and innovative treatments for infertility in men and women. One of the most important ones is delivering a baby with three parents which defective mitochondria in mother cell replaced by new mitochondria from donor to birth defects corrected and healthy baby is born.
